The proclamation celebrates the dynamic Igbo community in North Carolina, many of whom have made the state their home for over five decades. Governor Stein described the Igbos as an integral part of North Carolina’s social, cultural, and economic fabric.
“Igbos in North Carolina are involved in many charitable causes and have contributed significantly to our economy,” the governor noted. “They volunteer in schools, participate in elections, support women’s shelters and hospitals, clean up highways, and organise food drives—all while enriching our communities through art, language, music, and tradition.”
He commended the community for its excellence across sectors including education, law, medicine, entrepreneurship, information technology, and the arts, praising their strong civic spirit and unwavering commitment to cultural preservation.
The proclamation also acknowledged the efforts of the Igbo Day Festival Organisation, a nonprofit established in 2022 to promote awareness and appreciation of Igbo culture. The group hosted the first Igbo Day Festival on July 10, 2022, as part of broader efforts to connect the Igbo diaspora and educate the public about their rich traditions.
