Speaking at an emergency plenary session, Akpabio emphasized the importance of maintaining order within the legislative chamber after the Court of Appeal in Abuja affirmed the Senate’s constitutional authority to discipline its members.
The three-judge panel unanimously ruled that the suspension—imposed over allegations of misconduct—did not violate Akpoti-Uduaghan’s parliamentary privileges or constitutional rights.
He added that the court’s decision judicially confirmed the Senate’s disciplinary powers, noting that the judiciary recognized lawmakers’ authority to sanction erring government officials.
