The president made this call during an interfaith breakfast meeting with senators held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, according to a statement released by Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.
Tinubu described the creation of state police as a matter of growing urgency, citing the need to tackle mounting security threats across the nation. He argued that decentralising policing powers would bolster security at the grassroots level and enable faster responses to local threats.
“We are facing terrorism, banditry and insurgency,” the president said, adding that he was confident the country would rise to meet these challenges. He urged senators to begin deliberating on the best approach to embedding state policing into the constitution.
