The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed the full resumption of train operations along the Abuja–Kaduna corridor following a disruption earlier in the week that left 26 passengers injured.
The Managing Director of the corporation, Kayode Opeifa, disclosed the development on Wednesday, assuring passengers of strengthened safety measures and improved operational standards.
In a statement shared via his 𝕏 account, Opeifa said services were restored after swift action by NRC personnel.
“Following the incident on Monday, March 16, 2026, normal train operations have been fully restored through the swift intervention of the Nigerian Railway Corporation,” he said.
He encouraged commuters to resume travel, noting that enhanced safety protocols have been implemented to ensure more secure and comfortable journeys.
Opeifa added that the corporation’s prompt response helped minimise disruption while reinforcing its commitment to passenger safety.
The NRC also confirmed the successful return trip of the Abuja–Kaduna train service from Rigasa in Kaduna State, marking a full return to normal operations on the busy route.
“We are pleased to welcome passengers on the return trip from Rigasa, Kaduna State, on March 17, 2026, with support from HRH (Alhaji) Ishaq Ibrahim Tanko, Hakimin Idu District Head, Abuja,” he said, adding that services are now “back to normal, safer and better.”
The disruption occurred around 9:16 a.m. on Monday near Asham Station along the rail line. The affected train, identified as KA2, had departed Rigasa and stopped at Jere before continuing its journey.
According to the NRC, after leaving Jere—where an additional rear locomotive was attached—the locomotive became detached while the train was in motion. It reportedly rolled forward and collided with the rear section of the same train, hitting the power car and the last passenger coach.
The corporation clarified that the incident did not involve two separate trains but was an internal operational fault involving a detached locomotive.
Opeifa said new safety and operational measures have since been introduced to prevent a recurrence, reiterating the NRC’s commitment to providing reliable and secure rail transport as services stabilise along the corridor.
