The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the arrest and investigation of the Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Charles Wobodo, following an attack on the convoy of former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi.
Papers News reports that the party made the demand while reacting to comments by the council chairman concerning the incident, which occurred on Friday, March 6, 2026.
Amaechi was reportedly travelling along the Omuanwa axis on his way to his hometown, Ubima, for party registration when the attack took place.
Addressing journalists, the Rivers State Chairman of the ADC, Leader Bari, dismissed claims that those who blocked the road were members of a recognised vigilante group.
According to him, the individuals involved in the incident were hoodlums rather than members of the OSPAC vigilante group.
“We travelled through other communities and even saw some OSPAC members along the road, but they did not block the road,” Bari said.
“When we got to Omuanwa, the road was blocked by people he is now referring to as OSPAC members, but from what we saw they were hoodlums.”
Bari further alleged that the attackers initiated the confrontation by opening fire on security operatives attached to the former governor’s convoy.
He said the personnel were forced to respond after coming under attack.
According to him, the circumstances surrounding the incident raise serious questions that security agencies must investigate.
He urged law enforcement authorities to arrest the Ikwerre Local Government chairman and compel him to provide information that could help unravel what transpired.
Also speaking, the ADC chairman in Ikwerre Local Government Area, Temple Chinedu, claimed that members of the party had been threatened even before the incident occurred.
Chinedu alleged that the party had received warnings suggesting that it would not be allowed to hold political meetings in the area.
“Early hours of the 6th of March, we already suspected something like that could happen because we had been threatened and warned that we would no longer hold any meeting in Ikwerre Local Government,” he said.
The party insisted that a thorough investigation is necessary to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack on Amaechi’s convoy.
