After boycotting Gov. Yusuf’s meeting, Senator Kawu Sumaila holds ‘critical meeting’ with Kano South lawmakers
Lawmakers from Kano South Senatorial District on Monday held what they described as a “critical meeting” to deliberate on their political future, amid growing discontent with the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The meeting, led by Senator Kawu Sumaila, was attended by prominent members of the House of Representatives, including Alhassan Doguwa, Kabiru Rurum, Abdulmumin Jibrin and Abdullahi Rogo.
The development comes barely a day after Messrs Sumaila and Rurum reportedly boycotted an invitation by Governor Yusuf to attend an enlarged meeting with APC members of the State and National Assembly, further signalling widening cracks within the party ranks in Kano State.
Sources familiar with the Monday meeting organised by the senator in his office in Abuja told DAILY NIGERIAN that the lawmakers extensively discussed their political direction, citing what they described as “political neglect” of the Kano South zone by the state government.
The legislators reportedly expressed concern over what they see as the marginalisation of their region, alleging that the governor and his close political associates have taken key decisions affecting Kano South without adequate consultation.
“We are in touch with serving and former lawmakers, as well as former party leaders who were recently sidelined from our zone,” a source said.
“We are also consulting top businessmen, clerics and other stakeholders from Kano South to chart a new political course.”
Another source however said the aggrieved lawmakers are expected to meet with Gov. Yusuf on Monday night to table their proposal.
While it remains unclear whether the aggrieved lawmakers are considering a defection to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, indications suggest they may take a decisive stand against their current party if their grievances are not addressed.
