CAN Demands Swift Justice Over Plateau Killings, Says Nigerians Are Fed Up With Endless Mourning
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has strongly condemned the recent killings in Plateau State, calling on security agencies to urgently arrest and prosecute those behind the attack.
CAN President, Daniel Okoh, described the incident as tragic and unacceptable, noting that citizens are growing increasingly frustrated with recurring violence and what he called routine official statements lacking concrete action.
In a statement released late Monday, Okoh expressed concern over the continued wave of attacks, particularly the latest incident in Angwan Rukuba, located in Jos North Local Government Area.
He stressed that Nigerians are no longer satisfied with condolences alone, insisting that those responsible must be swiftly brought to justice.
The attack, which occurred on Sunday, reportedly left 28 people dead and several others injured, triggering protests and widespread outrage within the community.
CAN stated that the incident has further eroded public trust and must be thoroughly investigated to prevent a recurrence. The body urged security agencies to move beyond reactive measures and adopt proactive strategies to curb such violence.
While acknowledging efforts by the state government, Okoh warned that temporary interventions would not be enough to guarantee lasting peace and security.
He also appealed to citizens to remain calm but alert, emphasizing the need to ensure justice for victims and protection for communities.
Meanwhile, Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, confirmed that 28 lives were lost in the attack, describing the incident as deeply painful.
In a statewide broadcast, the governor expressed sympathy with affected families and assured residents that the government would intensify efforts to improve security across the state.
He reiterated the administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, adding that the state would not succumb to fear or intimidation.
Mutfwang also visited the affected community and injured victims, as authorities imposed a curfew in the area to restore calm and prevent further unrest.
