Eid-el-Fitr: Emir Sanusi gets Gov. Yusuf’s nod to hold ‘restricted Durbar’ in Kano
The Kano State Government has approved a scaled-down Eid-el-Fitr Durbar, granting the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, permission to lead what authorities described as a “restricted” celebration amid heightened security concerns.
The approval, given by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, follows what officials say are credible intelligence reports indicating attempts by some individuals to foment unrest during the Sallah festivities.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said the government had introduced strict guidelines to ensure peaceful observance while preserving Kano’s cultural heritage.
Under the revised arrangement, only key durbar activities will take place. The traditional Hawan Idi will be led by Emir Sanusi from the Kofar Mata Eid Praying Ground, proceeding through designated routes to the Kano Emir’s Palace.
Similarly, Hawan Nasarawa will be held in a modified format, with notable restrictions, including the exclusion of horseback displays.
However, other major durbar events—Hawan Daushe, Hawan Fanisau, and Hawan Dorayi—have been suspended in the interest of public peace and safety.
Waiya said security agencies across the state have been placed on high alert, with directives to intensify surveillance, enforce compliance with the new measures, and prevent any breach of peace before, during, and after the celebrations.
He urged residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and cooperative with security personnel, while also cautioning against the spread of unverified information that could heighten tension.
The government reaffirmed its appreciation for the efforts of security agencies in maintaining stability and extended its best wishes to Muslims in Kano and beyond for a peaceful and joyous Eid-el-Fitr celebration.
