The European Union has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties with Nigeria, focusing on trade, security, and strategic resources, following high-level talks with President Bola Tinubu.
The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, met with Tinubu on Monday at the President’s residence in Lagos. The meeting was attended by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and Minister of Budget and National Planning Abubakar Atiku Bagudu.
Speaking after the meeting, Kallas said discussions focused on expanding cooperation in key areas such as security, trade, and critical commodities. She described Nigeria and the EU as “like-minded partners,” emphasizing the need for stronger collaboration amid rising global geopolitical tensions.
According to her, both sides explored new opportunities for investment and trade, alongside partnerships in critical raw materials and enhanced cooperation in security and cybersecurity.
She noted that the current global security climate demands closer alignment among nations committed to upholding a rules-based international system.
In his remarks, President Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s readiness to deepen its partnership with the EU and expressed gratitude for the bloc’s continued support and engagement with the country.
The meeting signals renewed momentum in EU-Nigeria relations as both sides seek to navigate economic volatility and evolving security challenges through stronger collaboration.
