Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has resigned from the cabinet of President Bola Tinubu as he prepares to contest the Bauchi State governorship election ahead of 2027.
The resignation was confirmed on Monday by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa.
According to reports, Tuggar submitted his resignation letter to President Tinubu shortly after noon on the same day. Sources indicate that he intends to run for governor of Bauchi State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
His decision to step down follows a directive issued earlier in March by the presidency, mandating all political appointees seeking elective office to resign from their positions.
The directive, communicated through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, requires affected officials to vacate their offices on or before March 31, 2026.
Those impacted by the order include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, and heads of federal agencies.
The move aligns with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, which is designed to prevent conflicts of interest as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
