Gospel singer and songwriter Onos Brisibi, widely known for her association with Lagbaja, has passed away at the age of 55.
Her death was announced on Thursday by her cousin, veteran Nollywood actor Richard Mofe-Damijo, via Instagram. According to him, the singer died on March 23, 2026, after battling a prolonged illness.
In an emotional tribute, Mofe-Damijo described the late Brisibi as a loving family member, devoted Christian, and gifted vocalist whose music uplifted many and drew people closer to God. He fondly recalled her vibrant personality, humour, and the cherished memories they shared growing up.
Born on November 20, 1970, to the late Apostle Ambrose Oproze Brisibi and Deaconess Mary Koko Brisibi in Aladja, Udu area of Delta State, Onos built a life rooted in faith, music, and service. She is survived by her daughter, Sarah, her mother, and siblings.
Onos was deeply involved in church ministry, particularly with Christ Embassy, where she served as a worship leader and singer for many years. She first gained recognition during her time at Delta State University, impressing audiences with her powerful renditions of songs by global stars like Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, and Aretha Franklin.
Over the years, she collaborated with several prominent Nigerian musicians, including reggae artiste Daniel Wilson and gospel singer Sammie Okposo. She also contributed to Lagbaja’s album No Do GraGra and participated in various live band performances.
Singer Ego Ihenacho had earlier revealed in a 2023 interview that Onos played a significant role in her joining Lagbaja’s band, eventually stepping in for her during a period of absence.
Onos Brisibi is remembered for her impactful contributions to gospel music and Nigeria’s live performance scene. Her legacy lives on through her music, ministry, and the many lives she touched.
