The family of celebrated Christ Apostolic Church gospel singer Deborah Fasoyin has moved swiftly to shut down false reports circulating on social media claiming she had passed away.
Her son, Korede Fasoyin, spoke directly with Punch to set the record straight, confirming that his 86-year-old mother beloved across Nigeria for the iconic Yoruba gospel song “Odun n Lo Sopin” is very much alive.
The rumour had gained significant traction online, with photos of the veteran singer appearing alongside “RIP” captions and a flood of condolence messages from unsuspecting followers.
“My mother is alive. The news of her death is fake. We are already doing a video for her to speak,” Korede stated, adding that the family was preparing a video featuring Mama Fasoyin herself to offer further reassurance to concerned well-wishers.
He revealed that the misinformation triggered an overwhelming wave of calls from across Nigeria and beyond, beginning as early as midnight. “I started receiving calls from outside Nigeria and within Nigeria since midnight, asking if she was dead. I don’t know the mischievous person who posted that without verifying,” he said.
The false reports emerged just weeks after Mama Fasoyin marked a joyful milestone — her 86th birthday on March 1, 2026. A deeply revered figure in the Christ Apostolic Church and in Nigerian gospel music more broadly, her family has urged the public to disregard the circulating reports entirely.
