Insecurity: Lawmaker Seeks Permanent Military Base In Sokoto After Bandits Attack
The Deputy Speaker of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Kabiru Ibrahim, has called for the immediate establishment of a permanent military base in Mallammawar Yari, following a recent bandit attack that has left residents of the community living in fear.
Papers News reports that Ibrahim made the appeal while reacting to the latest security breach in the area, stressing that the presence of a military formation would significantly strengthen ongoing security operations and help safeguard lives and property.
The lawmaker explained that Mallammawar Yari, located in Kware Local Government Area, shares a boundary with Rabah Local Government Area, a location that has, in recent times, witnessed increasing activities of bandits and other criminal elements.
He noted that the strategic position of the community has made it particularly vulnerable to attacks, despite ongoing military operations aimed at restoring peace across Sokoto State.
According to him, criminal groups often exploit the difficult terrain in the border areas between the two local government areas to launch attacks before retreating to their hideouts.
The Deputy Speaker said establishing a military base in Mallammawar Yari would serve as a strong deterrent to criminal activities while improving the ability of security forces to respond quickly to emerging threats.
He explained that the presence of soldiers in the community would not only discourage bandits from operating in the area but would also enhance security coverage for neighbouring communities that have also been affected by similar attacks.
While acknowledging the security challenges in the state, Ibrahim commended the efforts of the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies working to combat banditry in Sokoto State and across the North-West.
However, he stressed that additional security infrastructure and a stronger presence of security personnel were necessary to consolidate the progress already made in the fight against banditry.
The Deputy Speaker, therefore, urged the Federal Government of Nigeria and military authorities to urgently consider the request for a permanent military base in the community in order to prevent further attacks and possible displacement of residents.
He also appealed to members of the community to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could assist in tracking criminal elements operating in the area.
