A ballistic missile launched from Iran fell in the Lebanese capital Beirut on Tuesday, marking the first time that Iranian missiles have been intercepted over Lebanon.
Reuters suggests that the missile could have been intercepted by a foreign naval vessel, amid unconfirmed reports that a US asset may have been targeted.
Regional media have shared unverified chatter that the US Embassy, the Hamat Air Base or a site in Cyprus may have been targeted by an Iranian missile, as footage showed several buildings damaged in the Sahel Alma and Haret Sakher areas.
There has been no official confirmation from US officials.
Meanwhile, Lebanese state media said that an air strike hit a Christian town north of Beirut, an area that had not yet been targeted since Hezbollah entered the war following the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.
There were no immediate reports of casualties in the town of Sahel Alma. Witnesses in the area said they heard several blasts and saw white smoke emanating from the town.
The Israeli military also commented on the incident. “Following an assessment and based on the data available to the IDF, alongside the launches carried out toward the State of Israel earlier today, a ballistic missile fired by the Iranian terror regime fell in Beirut,” an army statement said.
