Popular media personality Morayo Afolabi Brown has shared the story of her unconventional journey into television, revealing that she never initially planned to become a show host.
Speaking at the Refire Conference, she recounted her early struggles, career setbacks, and eventual breakthrough in the broadcasting industry.
According to her, she had originally intended to work behind the scenes and lacked confidence in her ability to speak fluently, even dealing with a stammer at the time. The plan was to hire another presenter, and she brought in Joy Isi Bewaji, who later became widely recognized for her writing.
However, events took an unexpected turn when the selected host stepped aside shortly before the programme was scheduled to go live. With little time to prepare, Morayo was compelled to step in as host despite her fears. That moment marked the beginning of her on-air career, and the show gradually gained popularity.
She also opened up about a major setback at Television Continental (TVC), where she was removed from her role. Frustrated by the decision, she challenged it and defended her contributions to the station. Days later, she was reinstated, but in a lower position.
Despite the demotion, she remained committed to her work and continued building her career. In 2019, she resigned from her full-time role but stayed on as a contract staff member, still anchoring her programme.
By 2023, she rose to the position of Managing Director, a milestone she initially saw as a major achievement. However, she admitted that the role did not bring the fulfillment she expected.
Her turning point came after she developed a new television concept and secured ₦100 million in funding through her company. The experience pushed her to reflect on her journey and inspired her to pursue her own vision.
She eventually left her role to build her own platform, leading to the launch of her programme, The Morayo Show.
Reflecting on her journey, she said she was once sacked and later rehired in a demoted capacity, resigned in 2019, and later became an MD in 2023, yet still felt unfulfilled. According to her, receiving funding for her idea gave her the confidence to start afresh and take control of her career.
She added that every day remains a learning process, emphasizing that personal growth often comes from embracing change and trusting one’s potential.
