The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has explained why it did not know about the alleged sexual assaults during a festival in Ozoro, Delta State.
The explanation came after a Facebook user, Chukwunenye Nweke, questioned the agency’s awareness of the long-standing cultural event.
In response, NAPTIP said it had no operational office in Delta State, limiting its ability to monitor incidents locally. The agency emphasized that addressing human trafficking and gender-based violence requires cooperation across all sectors of society.
“As you know, we cannot be everywhere at all times. Currently, we do not have a command yet in Delta State. Fighting this menace needs an approach from all of society,” the agency said. “If you see something, say something. We encourage the public to use social media to raise awareness of the dangers of human trafficking and sexual and gender-based violence.”
Earlier, NAPTIP condemned the alleged assaults, calling them violations of human rights and acts of gender-based violence. The agency also commended the Nigeria Police Force in Delta State for their quick action, which led to the arrest of suspects, including the festival organiser and community head.
“NAPTIP will continue to support measures to ensure justice for victims and prevent the recurrence of such crimes,” the agency added.
