Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have uncovered a large stash of illicit drugs in the apartment of a former councillor in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, Lagos State, Sheleru Olalekan.
A statement by the NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, revealed that 40 kilograms of skunk, a strain of cannabis, were recovered from one of the rooms during a search.
The 45-year-old, who previously served two terms representing the Orimedu community and now works as a legislative aide, was arrested on March 2, 2026, at his residence in Ilado, Ibeju-Lekki.
“In his statement, Sheleru admitted ownership of both the drugs and the property where they were found. He also confirmed his previous two terms as a councillor representing the Orimedu community in the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Council,” Babafemi said.
According to the statement, a separate operation in the Federal Capital Territory on March 3 led the NDLEA operatives to intercept 32-year-old businessman Emeka Hyginus Okwor, travelling from Obollo-Afor, Enugu State, to Zuba, Abuja.
Babafemi said a search of his luggage uncovered 1,000 tapentadol 250mg pills hidden inside baby nappies.
The suspect reportedly confessed that he was transporting the drugs to Guduwa village, Gurara LGA, Niger State, where he runs a provision store.
The statement noted that the NDLEA operatives, on the same day, March 3, during patrol on the Kabba/Obajana Highway, Kogi State, intercepted a 1.55kg consignment of Colorado, a synthetic cannabis strain, concealed inside a standing fan carton.
The 36-year-old suspect, Mey Ali Muhamat, a Cameroonian from Maroua, was travelling in a commercial bus from Lagos to Cameroon via Lokoja, Kano, and Maiduguri.
The agency said its commands across the country also continued the war against drug abuse through enlightenment campaigns in schools and communities, including sensitisation programmes in secondary schools in Oyo, Niger, Zamfara, Lagos, Sokoto, Ebonyi, and Anambra States.
The NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Buba Marwa, commended officers from the Lagos, FCT, Kano, Niger, Kogi, Edo, Ogun, Delta, and Adamawa commands for the arrests and seizures, urging them to maintain the agency’s balanced approach to drug control nationwide.
These arrests form part of the NDLEA’s ongoing nationwide clampdown on drug trafficking, with the former councillor’s detention joining a list of high-profile suspects recently apprehended by the agency.
Last year, the NDLEA arrested a notorious drug kingpin and Lagos socialite, 61-year-old Aishat Elediye, in connection with an illicit drug shipment.
Known in the underworld as “Iya Ruka” and socially as “Alhaja Elediye,” she had kept her true identity hidden for years, adding to her notoriety.
