Nigeria, Singapore Advance TVET Reform with Proposed Two-Year AI Programme

Nigeria has taken a further step in overhauling its Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) framework following renewed engagement with Singapore aimed at embedding artificial intelligence into formal technical education pathways.
The Federal Government confirmed plans to introduce a structured two-year diploma focused on practical AI applications across selected institutions nationwide.
The initiative forms part of a broader bilateral cooperation programme designed to modernise Nigeria’s skills ecosystem and reposition technical education for a digital economy.
Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, disclosed that discussions have progressed following high-level engagements with Singaporean education authorities.
Recent consultations in Abuja with Singapore’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Lim Sim Seng, advanced implementation plans for agreed areas of collaboration.
Under the framework, the Institute of Technical Education through its international arm, ITE Education Services, will provide technical support for curriculum development and programme deployment.
The proposed diploma marks a strategic departure from conventional vocational models that have historically concentrated on traditional trades, signaling a shift toward advanced digital competencies.
Officials stated that the AI-focused programme is intended to equip students with applied knowledge relevant to automation, data systems, machine learning applications, and emerging industrial technologies.
The objective is to integrate advanced technical capabilities into Nigeria’s formal TVET architecture rather than limit innovation training to universities or specialised research institutions.
The partnership also introduces the Global Excellence Model for Skills Training, a structured performance assessment framework that will evaluate institutions across multiple dimensions, including governance standards, training quality, industry alignment, and institutional leadership.
Capacity development remains central to the agreement. Plans include executive training for 40 heads of technical institutions as well as a Train-the-Trainer initiative aimed at strengthening instructional methodology, assessment systems, and pedagogical standards.
Education authorities expect these measures to reinforce institutional management and enhance classroom delivery outcomes.
The collaboration builds on earlier engagements led by Dr. Alausa during a visit to Singapore in late 2025, where he toured campuses of the Institute of Technical Education and held consultations focused on expanding cooperation with Nigeria’s National Board for Technical Education.
Those meetings emphasized quality assurance, instructor development, curriculum modernization, and digital programme integration.
The current reform momentum follows an aggressive federal push to restructure Nigeria’s TVET sector.
In 2025, the government introduced a nationwide technical skills initiative that attracted more than 90,000 applications within its first week. Curriculum adjustments have since placed 80 percent emphasis on practical training and 20 percent on theoretical instruction to align graduate output with labour market demands.
Participation trends have reflected strong uptake, with entrance examination numbers reportedly increasing sharply compared to the previous year.
Additional interventions include student stipends, infrastructure upgrades in technical colleges, and the deployment of biometric attendance verification systems to strengthen accountability and reduce programme leakages.
Singapore’s model has frequently been cited as a benchmark for building a skills-driven economy through structured vocational pathways and strong industry linkages.
By incorporating elements of that framework, Nigerian policymakers aim to improve workforce readiness, stimulate productivity, and align technical education with emerging technology sectors.
If successfully implemented, the AI diploma initiative could redefine Nigeria’s vocational education landscape by positioning technical institutions as pipelines for advanced digital talent.
The reform also reflects a broader strategic recognition that competitiveness in the modern economy increasingly depends on applied technological capacity rather than traditional skill segmentation.
The next phase will focus on operational rollout, accreditation processes, and institutional readiness as Nigeria moves to embed artificial intelligence training within its national technical education system.
