The Nigerian Military successfully thwarted an early morning attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) insurgents in Malam Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State on Wednesday.
Troops from Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), working closely with the Nigerian Air Force, reportedly killed at least 61 ISWAP fighters during the foiled infiltration attempt.
According to sources involved in the operation, the insurgents advanced on foot and deployed armed drones in an attempt to breach the defenses at the 68 Battalion location. The attack, originating from the Duguri general area through Bravo Company’s front, was met with coordinated ground and air countermeasures.
Precision air strikes, coupled with ground maneuvers, inflicted heavy casualties on the terrorists and forced them to retreat toward the Arege general area. Additional air support from allied Nigerien forces further pressured the fleeing insurgents, though full damage assessments from these strikes are still ongoing.
Four soldiers sustained minor injuries during the operation and have received medical attention. Sources highlighted that the joint coordination of air and land forces was crucial in neutralizing the threat and denying the insurgents any operational freedom.
