Sam Amadi, Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought and a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, has warned that Nigeria could experience a weaker democracy in 2027 than it does today.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Tuesday, Amadi criticized the country’s political and judicial systems. He said political parties in Nigeria lack internal democracy, while the judiciary is largely ineffective. According to him, the Electoral Act also attempts to limit judicial oversight, and even where judicial review exists, it remains inconclusive.
“In 2027, we are going to have worse democracy than it currently is. The Nigerian party system lacks internal democracy due to structural and normative challenges,” Amadi said.
Amadi also cautioned against overreliance on technology by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Speaking at the Citizens Town Hall Meeting on the Electoral Act 2026 in Abuja, he called for a bipartisan audit of INEC’s technological systems, citing unresolved issues from the 2023 elections.
“We finished the 2023 election with numerous allegations and problems. The National Assembly conducted no public hearings, and no officials were put under oath to explain what happened. It was shambolic. Nigerians should not place full confidence in INEC’s technology deployment,” he added.
