Ogun 2027: 15 Contenders Eye Governor Abiodun’s Seat as Succession Battle Heats Up

As the 2027 general elections approach, political activity in Ogun State is intensifying, with 15 aspirants 11 men and four women eying to succeed Governor Dapo Abiodun, whose second term ends on May 29, 2027.

The race for the Oke-Igbehin Government House has drawn a mix of political heavyweights, technocrats, and seasoned politicians, signaling what promises to be a fiercely contested election.

Among the frontrunners is Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, representing Ogun West Senatorial District. Reports indicate he enjoys widespread support, including from several State House of Assembly members. Despite speculation about possible presidential backing, Adeola has been consolidating his base across the state.

Other notable male aspirants include House of Representatives member Gboyega Isiaka, a three-time governorship candidate; Abiodun Akinlade of Yewa South/Ipokia Federal Constituency; former CBN Deputy Governor Dr Tunde Lemo; former Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK Sarafa Ishola; ex-House Speaker Dimeji Bankole; Finance Minister Wale Edun; Communications Minister Dr Bosun Tijani; and Dr Tunji Oredipe.

From the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), 2023 governorship candidate Oladipupo Adebutu, known as Lado, remains a key figure but faces internal party challenges that may affect his prospects. Meanwhile, Segun Showunmi of the Alternative Movement has reportedly gained backing from multiple smaller parties, including the Labour Party, Action Democratic Party, and Action Alliance.

Women Contenders Gain Momentum

The women’s race is also shaping up to be competitive. Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has re-entered politics via the APC, stirring significant interest. Current Deputy Governor Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele is reportedly considering a bid, with campaign materials already circulating. Veteran broadcaster Modele Sarafa-Yusuf and US-based physician Dr Bolaji Odusina are also in the race, leveraging their public profiles and grassroots connections.

Calls for Ogun West Power Shift

The demand for a power rotation to Ogun West, which has never produced a governor since 1976, continues to dominate discussions. APC may explore a consensus arrangement to manage internal competition, while traditional rulers from Ogun West, led by the Olu of Ilaro, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, are actively seeking support for the region’s claim.

Religious considerations are also being noted, though observers argue that religion has historically played a minor role in South-West politics.

Political Landscape and Public Sentiment

Sources close to Adeola suggest that public sentiment is heavily in his favor, with widespread grassroots support across markets and communities. Analysts indicate that any serious party must prioritize electability and popularity when selecting its candidate, citing past election setbacks caused by imposed candidates.

On zoning and fairness, stakeholders note that the governorship has traditionally rotated between Ogun East and Central, leaving Ogun West at a historical disadvantage. Observers hope the APC will adopt an approach similar to Edo State, where excluded regions were given an opportunity to produce a candidate, promoting equity and balance.

Governor Abiodun Remains Neutral

Responding to rumors of backing a particular aspirant, Governor Abiodun’s media adviser, Kayode Akinmade, clarified that the governor is not supporting any specific candidate. He stressed that the APC will rally behind whoever emerges as its flagbearer.

With alignments, endorsements, and political maneuvering underway, Ogun State is set for a high-stakes, closely watched governorship contest in 2027.
