The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has refuted claims that its officers opened fire on members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers at the union’s headquarters in Garki II, Abuja, describing the reports as false and misleading.
According to the police, the incident followed a distress call reporting a violent confrontation between rival factions of the union. Officers who responded to the scene arrested seven individuals: Sularman Musa, Nasiru Ibrahim, Alhaji Sadisu Musa, Dalha Suleiman, Abdullahi Garba, Saheed Fojebi, and Ibikunle Baruwa. The suspects have since been arraigned before Magistrate Court 1 in Wuse Zone 2.
Police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, explained that about 300 individuals, armed with cutlasses, bottles, bows, and arrows, had stormed the NURTW office on Sapele Street around 7 a.m. in an attempt to enforce a court ruling without the presence of authorized court officials.
She noted that the situation escalated when other union members resisted the move, resulting in a clash. During the incident, one person suffered serious machete injuries to the neck and was rescued by police officers, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The command emphasized that no shots were fired by its personnel and confirmed that calm has been restored to the area. It also urged residents to assist security agencies with timely information, reiterating its commitment to maintaining safety across the Federal Capital Territory.
