The Ogun State Police Command has ordered an investigation into an incident involving its officers from the Kemta Police Station in Abeokuta, and an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps
The command, in a statement issued on Monday by its Spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the matter had been referred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough probe.
According to available information, the incident, which occurred on March 5, 2026, reportedly involved officers from the Kemta Police Station.
Eyewitnesses’ accounts report that tensions rose after police allegedly released a suspect who had been accused of injuring a student.
When students confronted the suspect, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Kemta Station reportedly ordered the student arrests.
During this intervention, police allegedly fired tear gas canisters into the school premises.
The NSCDC officer on duty was reportedly attacked by police personnel after attempting to intervene in the student arrests.
Witnesses alleged that phones belonging to both the NSCDC officer and several teachers were seized during the scuffle.
Babaseyi said the command was aware of the incident and would work with the NSCDC to determine what transpired.
“The Ogun State Police Command is aware of the incident that occurred at Government Technical College involving officers from Kemta Police Station and wishes to inform the public that the matter is currently under investigation, having been referred to the State Criminal Investigation Department,” he stated.
The command added that the investigation would examine the circumstances surrounding the incident to ensure due process and apply sanctions where necessary.
It also reaffirmed the existing collaboration between security agencies operating in the state.
“The Command will, in collaboration with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, examine the circumstances surrounding the incident exhaustively to ensure due process is followed with a view to apply sanction as appropriate and avoid a repeat of such incident,” the statement added.
The police further reassured residents that security agencies in the state maintain cordial working relationships in the interest of public safety.
“The Ogun State Police Command reassures members of the public that all security agencies operating within the state are maintaining cordial and collaborative working relationships in the interest of public safety,” Babaseyi said.
