The Akwa Ibom State Police Command on Sunday said it had arrested four suspects involved in the vandalism of Seplat Energy facilities in Ibeno Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement issued in Uyo.
John said that on March 11 at about 1200 hours, the command received a distress call from the Security Control Room of Seplat Energy Company.
The company reported that a group of youths led by their leader had allegedly vandalised and maliciously damaged the company’s signpost.
According to her, the suspects attempted to forcefully gain access to the facility with the intention of destroying other critical installations.
“Acting swiftly on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom Command, Baba Azare, operatives of the command immediately mobilised to the scene.
“Upon arrival, the operatives discovered that the company’s signpost had already been forcefully pulled down and destroyed,” she said.
The PPRO said the hoodlums, numbering about 25, violently resisted arrest and attempted to obstruct police operations.
She added that through a coordinated tactical response, the police successfully arrested four suspects.
John said the police surveillance team was currently on the trail of the ring leader and other fleeing members of the group who are still at large.
She said efforts were in top gear to ensure the arrest and prosecution of the remaining suspects.
The police spokesperson condemned the act of vandalism and criminal intimidation directed at corporate facilities operating within the state.
She reiterated that no individual or group had the right to resort to self-help, violence or destruction of property under any guise.
“The command warns members of the public, particularly youth groups, to desist from taking the law into their own hands.
“Grievances or disputes must be channelled through lawful and peaceful means, as any person or group found engaging in acts of vandalism, violence or sabotage will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
“The Akwa Ibom Police Command remains fully committed to protecting lives, safeguarding investments and ensuring a secure environment for lawful businesses to operate across the state,” she said.
