President Bola Tinubu has put forward Lamido Yuguda, former Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, to serve as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The presidency announced the nomination Wednesday through Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, noting it was made pursuant to Section 8(1) of the CBN Act, 2007. The appointment still requires Senate confirmation before taking effect.
Yuguda steps into the vacancy created when former Deputy Governor Bala Bello was reassigned as Special Adviser to the President on Political Economy.
The nominee brings decades of financial sector experience to the role. He launched his career at the CBN in 1984 as a foreign operations supervisor, later spent four years as an economist with the International Monetary Fund’s Africa department, and returned to the apex bank before retiring in 2016 as Director of Reserve Management.
Academically, Yuguda holds an accountancy degree from Ahmadu Bello University and a master’s in money, banking and finance from the University of Birmingham. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and holds the CFA charter.
He most recently headed the Securities and Exchange Commission between 2020 and 2024.
