Residents hold rally, want Lagos governorship zoned to Ikorodu

Many Ikorodu residents in Lagos State on Monday participated in a peaceful rally to seek the zoning of the Lagos State governorship seat to their area in the 2027 general election.

The rally was organised by a non-governmental organisation, United Area Club.

The residents walked from Ita-Elewa Sports Arena through the Ikorodu Roundabout to the palace of their Traditional Ruler, Oba Kabir Shotobi, who addressed them.

The Chairman of United Area Club, Olanrewaju Olabinjo, said zoning the seat to Ikorodu Division of Lagos State would promote inclusion, justice, equity and fairness.

He appealed to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to ensure that its Lagos State governorship candidate in the 2027 elections would come from Ikorodu.

Olabinjo said that Ikorodu was a large and densely-populated division of Lagos State and had been making significant contributions to the economic and socio-political development of the state.

He said: “We mobilised our people today to appeal that the seat can be zoned to Ikorodu.

“For over 30 years now, we have not held a very significant position in Lagos State.

“Ikorodu is supposed to produce the next governor of Lagos State.”

According to Olabinjo, the move is not confrontational but a call for equity.

Addressing the participants, Oba Shotobi praised them for their peaceful conduct.

He promised to take their request to the appropriate quarters, and prayed that God would  grant the request.

He urged them to remain peaceful and orderly.

“In 2027, the governorship candidate that will take us to the promised land should come from Ikorodu,” the monarch said.

A resident of Ikorodu, Odun Idowu, said the area was overdue to produce the governor of Lagos State.
