Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has pledged full support for Africa’s gaming sector as it evolves from a fragmented, informal market into a structured, globally competitive industry.
Speaking at the 3rd edition of the 2026 African Gaming Expo at Eko Hotels and Suites on Wednesday, themed “Africa’s Gaming Market: Frontier to Prominence”, Sanwo-Olu was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin.
The governor highlighted that the gaming industry, once on the fringes of the formal economy, is now undergoing significant transformation through regulation, technology, and investment. “What was once fragmented is now becoming structured, regulated, and globally competitive, and Lagos will continue to lead in support,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu emphasized the sector’s connection with technology, digital finance, sports development, and youth engagement, noting its potential to drive economic growth, create jobs, attract investment, and boost public revenue when properly managed.
Bashir Are, CEO of the Lagos State Lottery and Gaming Authority, described the expo as a platform to position Africa in the global gaming ecosystem while creating opportunities for tourism, local businesses, and international partnerships.
Peter Mebert, founder of Merbert Global Launchpad, urged African startups to leverage improved infrastructure and talent to scale globally, stressing the importance of strong leadership, strategic planning, and market insight for international competitiveness.
The expo featured sessions on regulatory collaboration, technological innovation, responsible gaming, youth empowerment, and sustainable investment across Africa.
