Shettima Arrives Lagos To Brief Tinubu On Maiduguri Bombings, Security Situation

Vice President. Kashim Shettima, has arrived in Lagos to brief President Bola Tinubu following his assessment of the security situation in Maiduguri.

Shettima’s visit comes days after coordinated suicide bombings rocked the Borno State capital, leaving at least 23 people dead and more than 100 injured.

In a post on his verified 𝕏 account on Sunday, Shettima said the trip to Maiduguri was at the President’s instance.

He met with families and communities affected by the attacks and conducted an on-the-spot review of the situation.

“The Vice President will brief the President on the outcome of his visit to Maiduguri to see families and communities affected by the tragic incidents in Borno State, as well as his on-the-spot assessment of the situation on the ground,” the post read.

“Thereafter, Vice President @KashimSM is expected to lead serving governors on Sallah homage to the President.”

The attacks struck around 7:02 p.m. on Monday. Explosions went off almost at once at the Maiduguri Monday Market, the Post Office Flyover and a security post at the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

Police confirmed 23 dead, with 108 others injured.

During a visit to the teaching hospital on Wednesday, Shettima described the bombings as “barbaric” and said no cause justifies the killing of civilians.

He assured victims of federal support through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the North East Development Commission (NEDC) and the Borno State Government.

“We will not rest on our laurels until full peace and sanity is restored in Borno, the Northeast, and the nation as a whole,” Shettima declared, adding that those responsible would be “decisively confronted.”
