President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s long-standing relationship with the United Kingdom during a historic state banquet held at Windsor Castle on March 18, 2026.
Speaking before an audience that included King Charles III, Queen Camilla, Prince William, and Catherine, Princess of Wales, Tinubu described the moment as a “profound honour,” noting that he is the first Nigerian leader to address guests at the historic venue.
The President reflected on the deep-rooted historical ties between both nations, stressing a shared commitment to mutual respect, cooperation, and common values. He highlighted Britain’s influence on global democracy, referencing the Magna Carta as well as the works of renowned thinkers like Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Edmund Burke.
Tinubu also acknowledged the cultural legacy of literary icons such as William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens, whose works helped shape the English language, now spoken by over 1.5 billion people globally.
He noted that Nigeria’s legal and political institutions continue to draw from British traditions, particularly English common law and constitutional governance.
The President further praised the contributions of Nigerians living in the UK, especially professionals working within the National Health Service. He also highlighted athletes of Nigerian descent making waves internationally, including Maro Itoje, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, and Anthony Joshua.
On international cooperation, Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the Commonwealth of Nations, describing it as a crucial platform linking 56 countries. He also pointed to ongoing security concerns in West Africa, particularly in the Sahel, emphasizing the need for sustained collaboration with the UK.
The President confirmed plans to hold talks with Keir Starmer during his visit. Despite global and regional challenges, he expressed confidence in Nigeria’s future, citing its youthful population, innovation, and resilience.
In a personal note, Tinubu recalled his time in exile during Nigeria’s military era, expressing gratitude to the UK and the Metropolitan Police for providing protection at the time.
He concluded his speech with a toast to stronger Nigeria–UK relations, expressing optimism about deeper cooperation in the years ahead.
