The Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu is working to restore lasting peace in troubled communities in Benue State, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (North Central), Dr Abiodun Essiet, has said.
Essiet gave the assurance on Friday during a visit to communities recently attacked in Kwande Local Government Area of the state.
During the visit, Essiet reassured residents of Kwande and other parts of Benue that the President was fully aware of the security challenges confronting the area.
She said the Federal Government was already taking steps to address the situation and strengthen security responses.
Essiet stated, “I met with the director of the Department of State Services and the commander of Operation Whirl Stroke before coming here because I had received some concerns about delays in response and issues of trust.
“They reassured me and explained the situation. We understand how deeply this affects you. I am here to see things for myself and report exactly what you have shared.”
Essiet emphasised that the Nigerian Army remained neutral and committed to protecting lives and property in the affected communities.
She further stated, “As you know, Mr President, as Commander-in-Chief, has supreme authority over all security operations.
“I want to assure you that the Nigerian Army remains neutral, committed to protecting lives and property, and will never take sides or arm anyone. I ask for your patience as these measures continue to be implemented.”
She added that the concerns raised by residents would be documented and communicated directly to the President.
“We are here to document your concerns and report them back to Mr President. You will soon see improvements in the activities of all security agencies,” she said.
The presidential aide also addressed issues surrounding the management of natural resources in the area.
She assured residents that their concerns would be communicated to the appropriate minister to ensure better collaboration between federal and state authorities.
According to her, legal mining activities and corporate social responsibility initiatives should benefit host communities through education, infrastructure and other social amenities.
Essiet added, “This is part of a broader strategy, which is why the President established the Community Engagement Office.
“This office manages engagement across the North Central region and prioritises the voices of communities like yours.”
Essiet urged residents to maintain open communication with government representatives.
“I urge everyone to continue communicating openly. When you speak, we understand your concerns. If you do not communicate, we cannot act effectively,” she added.
Speaking during the visit, the President of the Turan Development Association, Abaa Bichi, said the attacks on communities in the area appeared organised and systematic.
According to him, the attackers used the Benue border with Taraba State as a route to carry out the assaults.
Bichi also raised concerns over the activities of illegal miners, which he said were worsening insecurity in the area. He called on the government to suspend mining activities in the region until peace is fully restored.
The community leader further appealed for the reconstruction of federal roads linking the affected communities to improve movement and enhance security.
Traditional rulers, women, youths and some displaced persons were present to receive the presidential delegation during the visit.
