President Bola Tinubu has approved a major expansion of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG), extending its scope to include electric vehicles (EVs) as part of Nigeria’s nationwide clean mobility strategy.
Under the new framework, the initiative will be renamed the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PiCNG & EV), serving as the central platform for coordinating Nigeria’s transition to both gas-powered and electric transportation.
A statement by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga explained that PiCNG & EV will continue to drive the deployment of CNG infrastructure, including Mother and Daughter Stations, Integrated Refuelling Units, CNG vehicles, and nationwide conversion programs. In addition, the initiative will now oversee the development and rollout of EVs, charging stations, and related investments across the country.
“Gas remains a competitive and strategic transportation fuel, leveraging Nigeria’s abundant resources to lower costs, boost energy security, and conserve foreign exchange,” the statement said. “The inclusion of electric vehicles further strengthens the government’s commitment to affordable, efficient, and environmentally responsible mobility.”
President Tinubu also instructed the Executive Chairman of PiCNG & EV to establish a coordinated plan for the rapid deployment of vehicle conversion kits nationwide, ensuring these kits are accessible to Nigerians at reasonable costs. To achieve this, the initiative will collaborate with CreditCorp Nigeria, financial institutions, and other partners to create cost-effective financing solutions for vehicle conversions.
The statement added that the President has directed the accelerated rollout of Mobile Refuelling Units (MRUs) to expand access to CNG while permanent infrastructure continues to develop.
