The University of Lagos has hit back at its local chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), accusing lecturers of bypassing due process before declaring an indefinite strike while pledging that semester examinations will proceed as planned.
ASUU’s UNILAG chapter announced the walkout following a congress on Tuesday, pulling lecturers off duty from Wednesday in protest over what the union called “amputated” salaries. According to chapter chairman Prof. Idowu Keinde, staff have gone without key components of their January and February pay — including the Consolidated Salary Structure for Academics, the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, and the Professorial Allowance. Keinde said lecturers would not return until every outstanding component was fully settled.
University management pushed back swiftly. Speaking through communications head Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, UNILAG said the strike was declared without following proper procedures and insisted that dialogue with union leadership was already underway to resolve the salary disputes.
Despite the standoff, the university is drawing a firm line around its examination schedule. With semester exams already in progress, management warned that any disruption would have serious knock-on effects — particularly for students due to begin industrial attachments, internships, and Law School placements.
“All examinations will continue as scheduled from Thursday, March 12, 2026,” the university stated, directing deans to ensure smooth arrangements are in place.
Management did, however, acknowledge that some tests may be shifted where students had already been notified of postponements by their faculties. It closed its statement with an appeal for calm, urging all members of the university community to carry on with normal academic activities while negotiations continue.
