President Bola Tinubu has announced that the federal government is deploying cutting-edge security equipment to bolster real-time monitoring and rapid response to criminal activities nationwide, in a bid to tackle insecurity more effectively.
The president disclosed this on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, following deadly attacks in Angwan Rukuba district of Jos, Plateau State, and Kahir village in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State, where several people, including wedding guests, were killed and others abducted.
Describing the attacks as “an affront to all that Nigeria stands for,” Tinubu warned that such acts would not go unpunished.
“Anyone who will sneak under the cover of the night and kill defenceless citizens, as done in Jos and Kahir village, is a heartless coward. By attacking soft targets, their objective is not only to cause harm but also trigger a spiral of reprisal attacks and further bloodletting,” he said.
The president directed security agencies to intensify operations to apprehend the perpetrators and also urged vigilance against the spread of misinformation that could inflame tensions. He cautioned some sections of the media against framing the attacks as religiously motivated, stressing responsible reporting to prevent escalation.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to restoring peace, Mr Tinubu said security agencies were actively addressing the situation and called on citizens to cooperate fully with authorities. He also urged communities to comply with safety directives, including evacuation and relocation where necessary.
“I urge our security agencies to be more proactive in preventing these attacks by acting on early warning intelligence. All the remaining abductees from Kahir village must be rescued immediately,” he said.
Mr Tinubu commended Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, for his efforts in containing the situation in Jos and Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, for supporting rescue and security operations. He welcomed the safe return of two Kaduna victims and expressed condolences to families of those killed, while wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
