2027: Kano Set to Become Key Political Battlefield After Kwankwaso’s ADC Move — Abati
A former presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati, has projected that Kano State will emerge as a decisive battleground in the 2027 general elections following the defection of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking on The Morning Show on Tuesday, Abati noted that Kwankwaso’s move—alongside his loyalists from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)—has significantly boosted the ADC’s strength and could alter the balance of power within the opposition ahead of 2027.
He highlighted Kano’s electoral importance, pointing to its 44 local government areas and large voter base, placing it among critical states like Lagos State and Rivers State that are pivotal in deciding presidential elections.
According to Abati, Kwankwaso remains a dominant political force in Kano and his defection could reshape the political dynamics of the upcoming race. However, he raised concerns about internal competition within the ADC, particularly over its presidential ticket.
Abati questioned whether Kwankwaso—who has consistently expressed interest in the presidency—would secure the party’s ticket, settle for a vice-presidential role, or become part of a broader coalition.
He also alluded to growing speculation about a possible alliance between Kwankwaso and Peter Obi, noting that such a partnership could impact the standing of Atiku Abubakar within the party.
Abati further observed that the ADC now boasts several high-profile opposition figures, including Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Atiku, describing the evolving situation as the beginning of intense political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 elections.
He concluded that the unfolding alliances and ambitions signal the early stages of what is likely to be a highly dramatic and competitive political season.
