The Nigerian Police Force in Akwa Ibom State has successfully uncovered and defused explosive devices at the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre, averting what officials described as a potentially catastrophic incident.
In a statement released on Monday, Police Public Relations Officer, Timfom John, revealed that the operation followed credible intelligence provided by correctional authorities.
She explained that the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, promptly ordered the deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit along with other tactical teams to the facility.
A thorough search of the custodial centre led to the discovery of hazardous items, including two 90mm high-explosive rounds and a 45cm burning fuse. Security operatives also recovered tools such as pincers, a flat screwdriver, two 12mm iron chisels, and a conduit iron pipe.
According to the police, the EOD team professionally neutralised the explosives, eliminating any immediate threat and preventing possible loss of lives and destruction of infrastructure.
Following the incident, security around the facility has been significantly strengthened, with enhanced surveillance measures, stricter access control, and increased patrol activities.
Authorities have since launched an investigation to trace the origin of the explosives and apprehend those responsible. The police confirmed that no casualties were recorded and assured residents that the situation is fully under control.
The command also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, reiterating its commitment to safeguarding lives and critical infrastructure across the state.
