Justice Binta Fatima Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Hamatu Modu, a key food supplier to Boko Haram in Borno State, to 10 years in prison. Modu had admitted supplying food and information to the terrorist group.
Initially handed 40 years—10 years for each of the four counts—Modu’s sentences were ordered to run concurrently following a plea from his defence, reducing his effective prison term to 10 years.
The prosecution, led by Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, secured Modu’s conviction after he pleaded guilty to all charges.
In a related case, Isah Ali, another food supplier linked to Boko Haram, was also convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison, with his term backdated to his arrest three years ago.
Justice Nyako directed that both convicts undergo rehabilitation and deradicalisation programmes upon release. The Federal Ministry of Interior will determine the correctional facilities where the sentences will be served.
