Daniel Benjamin: The engineer building the infrastructure layer modern systems depend on

Daniel Benjamin builds the things most people never think about, until they stop working.
When you open a fintech app and your balance loads instantly, when a music platform streams without buffering, when a new product goes viral and doesn’t crash under the weight of its own success, there’s engineering underneath making that possible.
Benjamin is one of the people who makes those calls: how traffic gets routed, how databases hold up under pressure, how failures get caught before anyone notices.
He’s a software and infrastructure engineer who has worked across some of Nigeria’s most recognisable fintech and consumer technology products. He’s led mobile engineering teams, guided product expansion across three African countries, and helped a religious application scale to 150,000 users within three months of launch, with minimal bugs and no scrambling.
The work that keeps products standing
The conversation about Africa’s tech industry tends to centre on funding rounds, founder stories, and product launches. The engineers deciding how systems are structured rarely make it into that narrative. Yet the products that have scaled, the ones that held up under real user growth, did so because someone made the right infrastructure calls early.
Benjamin’s career is a record of those calls.
At Risevest, Nigeria’s investment platform for dollar-denominated assets, he led the mobile engineering team and oversaw product decisions that shaped the user experience. He significantly reduced application crashes, improved app store ratings through structured testing and monitoring, and managed a team whose work touched the financial lives of everyday users.
More consequentially, he led Risevest’s expansion into three African countries. Infrastructure built for a single market doesn’t automatically hold when you’re deploying across different regulatory environments, network conditions, and device ecosystems. Getting that right at scale, without disrupting existing users, is a distinct kind of engineering challenge, and one that determines whether expansion succeeds or stalls.
At Yohanna, an AI-powered religious application, Benjamin joined as a backend and infrastructure engineer and contributed to the architecture before users arrived. That groundwork paid off: the platform reached 150,000 users within three months of launch with very limited bugs and no significant scaling failures.

Why this work matters
The sectors Benjamin has moved through, fintech, music, and faith, represent three areas where Nigeria has seen significant growth over the past decade. Each demanded infrastructure capable of bearing weight immediately.
Risevest operates in financial technology, where instability can erode trust before it’s built. Yohanna, combining faith with AI, had to prove credibility to users navigating something novel. In both cases, there was little margin for infrastructure failure. The systems had to work from day one.
“Every decision I make involves balancing performance, scalability, and simplicity,” Benjamin says. “This is challenging and interesting because you have to carry along several stakeholders and make certain trade-offs. They all contribute to making the solution.”
This is the layer of technology that rarely gets discussed but always gets blamed when it fails. The engineers working at this level are deciding how much load a system can handle, how quickly it recovers from failure, and how new features roll out without breaking what already works.
These decisions shape whether a product can scale or collapse under its own success.
Infrastructure engineering is often invisible by design. When it works, no one notices; when it fails, everyone does. The engineers who do this work well create the conditions for everything else, the features, the growth, the user trust, to exist.
Benjamin has spent his career making these conditions possible across products and companies that millions of people use. The applications may carry other names. The infrastructure, in large part, carries his decisions.
For an industry still building its foundations, the people laying them matter more than most headlines suggest.
A foundation built early
Benjamin’s path to technology started with reading books at his grandmother’s house and inspiration from two uncles who worked in Nigeria’s tech space, one of whom was among the early engineers who brought technology into Nigerian banking.
As a young boy, he walked from Fadeyi to Mushin to buy electronic parts, sensors, and whatever he and his friends could piece together to build small robots. He taught himself using YouTube tutorials, reverse-engineering what he saw, largely without adult supervision.
By the time he was in secondary school, he’d found his people. A teacher on national youth service introduced him to jQuery and web technologies, and a small group of students formed what Benjamin describes as a “caucus,” building websites together.
He studied materials engineering at university, a deliberate choice to pursue a formal engineering credential while developing software skills on the side. Running both tracks simultaneously in Nigeria’s demanding academic environment is unusual.
What comes next?
Benjamin doesn’t have a fixed plan for what’s next, and he says so without apology. What he has is a direction: deeper into large-scale distributed systems, more involved in artificial intelligence, more committed to building infrastructure people can trust with things that matter to them.
“I want to continue to build systems at scale and build systems that people can trust, whether it’s a financial platform or user-facing application,” he says. “I’m looking forward to deepening my expertise in large-scale distributed systems, contributing to products with real-world impact, and contributing to open-source tools.”
He’s also building beyond his main roles, giving talks, contributing to open-source tools used within Nigeria’s tech ecosystem, and moving more seriously into AI by learning to build agents and AI-native products.
