Suspected gunmen have carried out another deadly attack in Jos, Plateau State, killing at least three people in Nyamgo Gyel, located in Jos South Local Government Area.
The incident occurred just days after a visit to the city by Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, raising fresh concerns about the worsening security situation in the region.
According to reports, the victims—identified as Luka Sandu Pam (36), Samuel Davou (38), and Deme Saidu (35)—were ambushed while riding a motorbike home from Gero.
Speaking to Channels Television, the Gyel Youth Leader, Dung Davou, revealed that the victims were part of a group of about 15 young men returning from a mining site when they were attacked.
He explained that the group came under sudden assault by suspected armed herdsmen, forcing them to flee in different directions.
“We started hearing sporadic gunshots, and everyone scattered. Unfortunately, three of our people were killed,” Davou said, while urging authorities to take decisive action to stop the recurring violence in the community.
The latest attack follows another deadly incident last Sunday in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area, where more than 10 people were reportedly killed and several others injured after gunmen invaded the area.
Reacting to the wave of violence, Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, suggested that the recent killings may have caught security forces off guard due to the relative peace experienced in the state over the past year.
He also alleged that the attackers studied residents’ patterns and disguised their operations to resemble those of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), enabling them to strike unexpectedly.
While describing the situation as troubling, the governor expressed hope that the incident would not become a recurring occurrence.
