A heart-wrenching scene unfolded in Jos, Plateau State, as Mrs. Favour Ayuba mourned her son, Promise Gideon Ayuba, who was killed in a violent attack that has left the community in shock.
Promise was among at least 24 people reportedly killed during a Palm Sunday assault on March 29 in Angwan Rukuba, where suspected gunmen opened fire on residents, deepening the cycle of violence in the region.
Standing beside her son’s coffin, the grieving mother broke down in tears, revealing she had not eaten since the tragic incident. Speaking in Hausa, she expressed her pain and longing, urging her son to seek justice for his death. In a symbolic gesture, she placed a cutlass wrapped in white cloth inside the coffin, calling on him to avenge the attack.
The burial coincided with what would have been Promise’s birthday, intensifying the sorrow of the moment. Despite her anguish, Mrs. Ayuba tried to find strength, saying she would hold back her tears because her son would not want to see her cry. She also promised to eat again in his memory.
Drawing inspiration from the Bible, she explained that her son was named after Gideon, a warrior figure, expressing belief that he had fought bravely even in death.
A video capturing the emotional moment has since circulated widely online, stirring reactions and highlighting the deep grief of families affected by the ongoing violence in the region.
