The member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Obi Aguocha, has revealed that his persistent demand for the release of the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has come at a high personal and political cost.
Aguocha said he had suffered losses and negative profiling due to his stance, but insisted that he had no regrets over his actions.
“I know what I have lost as a member of the House of Representatives for speaking up for Nnamdi Kanu and other constitutional issues, the positions I have taken,” he said.
The lawmaker disclosed that his continued advocacy has led to him being labelled and sidelined in certain quarters.
“I know what I am losing now because they have marked me, ‘okay he is always on this side’ but I don’t regret it any moment,” Aguocha added.
He maintained that his position was driven by conviction and a commitment to justice.
Aguocha further stated that he had been given the sole mandate by Kanu to negotiate his release, describing the move as a demonstration of trust.
According to him, the approval underscores the confidence the detained IPOB leader has in his efforts.
The federal lawmaker also criticised some leaders in the South-East for allegedly avoiding discussions around Kanu’s detention and broader challenges affecting the Igbo people.
He called for greater courage and unity among leaders in the region to address pressing issues.
Drawing a comparison, Aguocha urged Igbo leaders to emulate the approach adopted by Yoruba leaders in securing the release of Sunday Igboho.
He stressed the need for a coordinated and united effort to achieve similar results for Kanu.
The lawmaker, however, praised the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, for taking steps to mobilise South-East governors towards advocating for Kanu’s release.
He described the move as a positive development that could help galvanise broader support.
Aguocha also weighed in on future political contests, stating that the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, would not be able to defeat Otti in the 2027 governorship election.
