The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has refuted allegations that it copied an official statement from Dada Olusegun, an aide to President Bola Tinubu, describing the claims as inaccurate and misleading.
The controversy arose after INEC issued a statement addressing reports that its chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, operated a personal account on 𝕏 or had endorsed a political post on the platform. In the statement released on April 10, 2026, the chairman’s media office dismissed the allegations as false and warned about the circulation of fake accounts using his identity.
However, Peoples Gazette reported that Olusegun had posted a similar statement hours before INEC’s version was made public, sparking reactions on social media and raising concerns about the commission’s independence.
In response, INEC clarified that it did not copy any statement. The commission explained that any similar content circulating outside its official channels was shared without its knowledge or approval.
It further noted that the reposting of its statement was aimed solely at amplifying accurate information already released and should not be interpreted as an endorsement of any individual or political office.
Reaffirming its neutrality, INEC urged Nigerians to disregard claims questioning its independence and to rely only on its verified platforms for credible updates.
The development comes amid heightened public scrutiny of the electoral body as preparations continue for the 2027 general elections.
