The Lagos State Police Command has ordered the immediate removal of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit, widely known as the task force, from all traffic enforcement duties across the state.
The directive, issued by Commissioner of Police Fatai Tijani and communicated by the command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, is aimed at improving accountability and the overall management of traffic operations in Lagos. The police clarified that this measure only affects traffic-related responsibilities, and the task force will continue performing its other functions.
Authorities also reminded the public that the task force is not the sole enforcement unit in Lagos and urged residents and motorists to verify the identity of officials before filing complaints, particularly regarding traffic matters. The police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and property, emphasizing that all operations would remain lawful.
The decision follows increasing public complaints against certain task force members over alleged misconduct. Attention surged after a viral video emerged showing task force officials allegedly arresting a driver under questionable circumstances and demanding money.
In the footage, an officer was accused of moving the driver’s vehicle onto a one-way street to simulate a traffic violation, which the driver denied. Further claims suggested the driver was detained and later sent to prison, despite efforts to contact the task force chairman, who had reportedly promised to intervene.
This action underscores the police command’s commitment to restoring public confidence and ensuring professional conduct in traffic management.
