The Lagos State Government has announced temporary road closures and traffic diversions across key parts of Lagos Island in preparation for the 2026 Fanti Carnival, scheduled for Monday, April 6.
In a statement issued through the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, authorities revealed that several major roads will be shut from 7:00 a.m. on the day of the event to ensure smooth proceedings.
Affected routes include King George V Road at the Mobil Filling Station junction, Onikan Roundabout inbound to TBS, Flagstaff House inbound to TBS, Outer Marina by State House inbound to TBS, Campbell Street near the Old Defence Building, and Catholic Mission Street by St. Nicholas Hospital.
To reduce traffic disruptions, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has mapped out alternative routes. Motorists traveling from Obalende towards Onikan Roundabout will be redirected through Zone 2, while those coming from Bonny Camp heading toward McEwen Bridge, as well as drivers descending from Flagstaff House to TBS, will be diverted via Obalende Bridge. Traffic from Outer Marina to TBS will also follow the same route.
The government appealed to residents and commuters for patience and cooperation, stressing that the measures are necessary to guarantee safety and the success of the carnival.
While acknowledging the inconvenience the closures may cause, officials highlighted the Fanti Carnival as an important cultural event that contributes significantly to Lagos’ tourism and heritage.
