The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has officially taken over the collection of mineral royalties from operators in the country’s mining sector, following the enactment of the new tax legislation.
This development was confirmed after a meeting between the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Mr. Dele Alake, and NRS Chairman, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, at the minister’s office in Abuja to establish collaborative procedures.
According to a statement from Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser to the NRS Chairman, the transfer of responsibilities, effective January 1, 2026, was formalized in a joint declaration endorsed by both officials.
The statement notes: “Following the enactment of the laws by President Bola Tinubu on June 26, 2025, the administration of mineral royalties has transitioned to NRS. The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development remains a key technical partner, providing mineral pricing, geological data, and industry coordination to support the royalty process.”
Both institutions have pledged close collaboration to ensure mining operators are fully informed and the new royalty framework is implemented efficiently to foster growth in the sector.
The statement also announced a nationwide sensitisation program to guide operators on royalty filing and payments under the new law. A modern, end-to-end digital system for royalty administration will be developed, with regular technical sessions to address emerging issues.
“The Ministry and NRS are committed to ensuring the implementation of the new royalty framework is orderly, transparent, and supportive of the mining sector,” the statement added. “Operators are encouraged to meet their filing and payment obligations and actively participate in the sensitisation program.”
