Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Wednesday held separate meetings with key opposition figures in Abuja as political alignments ahead of the 2027 general election continue to gather momentum.

The consultations are part of efforts by opposition leaders to build a coalition capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu in the next presidential poll.

Atiku first paid a courtesy visit to the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, David Mark, before later meeting with former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.

The former vice president disclosed details of the visits on his verified X handle, where he shared photographs from the meetings.

“This afternoon, I visited the National Chairman of our great party, ADC, Senator David Mark at his residence in Abuja. It was a courtesy call that provided an opportunity to share ideas on how to further strengthen the ADC and restore confidence in Nigeria’s democracy,” Atiku wrote.

He also confirmed his meeting with Kwankwaso.

Atiku said: “I paid a courtesy visit to the residence of my brother and partner, His Excellency Rabiu Kwankwaso, this afternoon. We had quality discussions in the progress of our party, the ADC and how we must continue to work to ensure good governance and recovery are achieved in good time for the people.”

Kwankwaso’s recent defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the ADC has been widely interpreted as a major boost to the emerging opposition coalition.

The former governor had previously been linked with a possible move to the ruling All Progressives Congress, but eventually joined the ADC after months of speculation.

Political observers believe his entry into the party strengthens the coalition’s influence in Kano and the wider North-West region, an area considered crucial to winning national elections.

Those part of the alliance include former Senate President David Mark, former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola, former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal, and former APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun.
