By Umar Abdullahi — Conversations about leadership succession in Yobe State have always carried a unique weight. Since the state’s creation, its highest office has consistently been entrusted to men in their most energetic years.
In January 1992, Bukar Abba Ibrahim became Yobe’s first executive governor at 41. When democracy returned in 1999, he again assumed the governorship at 48. In 2007, Mamman B. Ali took office at 49, with Ibrahim Gaidam as his deputy at 50. Following Mamman Ali’s death in 2009, Gaidam became governor at 52 and later won full terms. In 2019, Mai Mala Buni succeeded Gaidam at 51.
This is not coincidence. It reflects a political culture that has consistently valued energy, drive, and the capacity to govern with youthful energy.
Governor Buni’s administration has not only sustained this tradition; it has deliberately expanded it. Through strategic appointments, he has empowered a new generation of young, competent individuals, placing them in critical roles across ministries, agencies, political offices, and party structures. They have been tested and they have delivered.
Yet as the 2027 elections approach, a curious silence hangs over this very generation. Public discourse remains dominated by older figures, nearly all in their 60s, with only a few in their late 50s who will be approaching 60 by the election. While the young leaders groomed within the administration are conspicuously absent from the succession conversation.
What explains this silence? Is it fear among the youth? Resistance from an entrenched older political class? Or simply that no signal has been given that the field is open?
This publication does not claim to have all the answers. Instead, it presents a selection of some young leaders, three from each senatorial district who embody the competence, loyalty, and capacity to build upon Governor Buni’s foundation, out of several hundred others who have also served with distinction. Available observations indicate that there are no fewer than one hundred qualified individuals within this category, including many young appointees who have played critical roles in supporting Governor Buni’s policies and programmes.
To give a sense of the depth and quality of this new generation, I will present a selection of nine profiles as evidence that the generation Buni has invested in is ready. The question of trust now demands an answer.

Emerging Strength and Political Depth
Dr. Abubakar Kagu Machina
A seasoned legal practitioner, academic, and administrator, Dr. Kagu brings a wealth of experience as a lawyer, senior lecturer, and Associate Professor of Law. He currently serves as Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Scholarship Board, where he has played a pivotal role in the administration of scholarships for students abroad, including the widely recognized BUNI Scholars programme ensuring that young people gain access to quality education and international exposure.
His political relevance is deeply rooted. He contested for the House of Representatives in 2023, participating in the party primaries, a testament to his ambition and readiness for higher office. Known for being outspoken and principled, Dr. Kagu has earned a reputation as a voice of courage and clarity within political circles. Within Governor Buni’s administration, he shares a strong and trusting relationship with the governor, built on years of loyalty and dependable service. His royal lineage further enhances his acceptability among traditional institutions, while his days as Student Union Government President at the University of Maiduguri continue to resonate with young people, giving him strong grassroots and youth support.
Alhaji Sani Mohammed Ismail Nguru
A calm, strategic, and forward‑thinking administrator, Alhaji Ismail serves as Permanent Secretary (Liaison), operating at the heart of government engagements with federal institutions. Though not a politician by practice, he has earned a reputation as a dedicated public servant who works seamlessly with Governor Buni on numerous official engagements, both within the country and abroad.
His strong coordination and policy interface skills, combined with humility and generosity, have earned him admiration, particularly among young people. He is known for his unwavering loyalty to the governor and has maintained a close working relationship with the administration over the years. His ability to build relationships makes him a key asset in sustaining the administration’s political and developmental objectives.
Hon. Sani Ahmed Kaitafi
A vibrant force in youth‑driven politics, Hon. Kaitafi is known for his resilience, pragmatism, and deep grassroots appeal. He gained valuable political experience working as a legislative aide at the National Assembly, where he honed his understanding of legislative processes and built networks that would later serve his political journey.
His administrative capabilities came to the fore when he was appointed head of the Yobe State Internal Revenue Service (YIRS). However, his tenure in that role was cut short due to factors beyond his control. Despite this setback, he has remained patient, dignified, and steadfast in his loyalty to Governor Buni and the party.
His connection with the people is profound. During the 2023 House of Representatives contest, despite the establishment leaning against him, the grassroots stood firmly with him. The sentiment across his constituency was clear: without Kaitafi, they would not back the party. That loyalty translated into a protest vote that ultimately cost the party the seat, a testament to the depth of his personal following and the trust his people place in him.
Through it all, Governor Buni’s affection for him has remained evident, and Hon. Kaitafi has consistently enjoyed the governor’s confidence. His patience, discipline, and long‑term vision continue to define his political journey, and his grassroots base has never wavered.
