A peaceful protest by youths on Wednesday led to severe traffic congestion along the ever-busy Benin–Lagos highway, leaving many motorists and commuters stranded.
The protesters blocked the road at the Oluku axis, halting vehicular movement and causing a prolonged gridlock that disrupted normal activities in the area.
The youths said their demonstration was driven by the growing economic hardship in the country, citing the increase in petrol prices, erratic power supply, poor road conditions, and the rising cost of food as major concerns.
They called on the government to urgently address these challenges, particularly the soaring cost of living, unemployment, and inflation affecting millions of Nigerians.
Carrying placards with messages such as “No to petrol hike,” “Fix our roads,” and “APC must go,” the protesters expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs.
Despite being peaceful, the protest forced many commuters to abandon their vehicles and walk long distances, while business activities in the area were also negatively affected due to restricted movement.
In a viral video shared online, one of the protesters lamented the worsening situation, accusing authorities of neglecting the plight of citizens.
He noted that the protest was aimed at drawing attention to the urgent need for government intervention, warning that continued neglect could lead to further public unrest.
