Retired senior officers from four paramilitary agencies have praised President Bola Tinubu after he approved a lifetime salary structure for top officers who have left service.
Papers News reports that the approval done in 2025, covers retired Controller Generals, Commandant Generals, and Comptroller Generals, as well as their deputies.
The retired officers drawn from the Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Fire Service, and the Nigerian Correctional Service paid a visit to the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in Abuja on Wednesday.
The visit was mainly to express appreciation to the Federal Government for the new welfare arrangement.
One of the retired leaders, former Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Chukwura Udeh, said the decision came after many years of delay. He noted that previous administrations did not resolve the matter, which had been pending for a long time. He said the approval brought relief to many who had served the country in different capacities.
In response, Tunji-Ojo said the welfare of security and paramilitary officers remains a key focus of the present administration. He explained that the government believes service to the nation should be matched with proper care after retirement, adding that those who spent years in uniform should not struggle in old age.
He also said that the administration is working to improve conditions within the services, pointing out that officers now have clearer career paths. According to him, promotion delays and backlogs have been addressed, while promotion examinations have been conducted across the agencies to ensure fairness and timely advancement.
Tunji-Ojo added that the goal is to restore dignity and pride in the uniformed services. He said officers who serve the country deserve stability after retirement and should not face hardship after years of dedication.
Some of the retired officers present at the meeting included former NSCDC Commandant General Abdullahi Gana and former Federal Fire Service Controller General Abdulganiyu Jaji, among others.
