Former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and returned to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), marking another major shift in his long political journey.
Shekarau announced his defection on Sunday at his residence on Mundubawa Avenue in Kano, where APC supporters were already seen displaying party insignia and posters in anticipation of his move.
Addressing his supporters, the former governor said the decision followed wide consultations and careful consideration of his political direction.
“We have weighed all the options and arrived at this collective resolution. Do you all agree?” he asked, inviting any opposing views before confirming the move.
He was accompanied by Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, another prominent PDP figure who also defected alongside him.
The development came shortly after Shekarau formally tendered his resignation from the PDP in a letter dated April 19, 2026, addressed to the party chairman in his Giginyu ward, Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
In the letter, he wrote: “Accept this letter please as notice of my resignation from my position as member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with effect from today.”
He also expressed appreciation to party officials at the grassroots level, wishing them success in their duties.
Copies of his resignation were sent to PDP leadership at both local government and state levels.
Shekarau’s exit comes amid ongoing internal tensions within the PDP, which have triggered a wave of defections and political realignments across the country.
Earlier in April, he had hinted at a possible departure during a visit by APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, describing the PDP as troubled and ineffective.
He was also reported to have held separate political consultations with President Bola Tinubu and Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, further fueling speculation about his next move.
Shekarau, who governed Kano State from 2003 to 2011 under the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), has had a long history of political transitions, including being a founding figure in the APC, a return to the party in 2018, and subsequent moves before rejoining the PDP prior to this latest defection.
