Ahead of the 2027 general elections, a coalition of stakeholders in Surulere on Wednesday rejected Desmond Elliot’s attempt to secure a fourth term as the Lagos State House of Assembly representative for Surulere Constituency I.
In a statement issued by the group’s spokesperson, Olanrewaju Badmus, the stakeholders cited Elliot’s three previous terms as marked by poor performance, limited policy innovation, and failure to address local issues effectively.
“After assessing his legislative record, community leaders, youth groups, small-business representatives, and civil society organizations concluded that Elliot’s tenure has fallen short of expectations,” Badmus said. He noted that the lawmaker delivered few constituency projects and lacked the drive to tackle infrastructure challenges, youth unemployment, and inadequate primary healthcare.
Badmus emphasized that the opposition was not personal but rooted in the principle that leadership must remain accountable, dynamic, and responsive to the evolving needs of the people.
“Three terms should have yielded measurable progress, yet we have seen stagnation, recycled ideas, and little evidence of impactful policy leadership,” he added.
The Surulere Accountability Forum also warned against portraying their position as reactionary or politically motivated and called for fresh candidates with innovative ideas to advance the constituency.
Meanwhile, some residents and APC supporters continue to back Elliot, holding a rally on Tuesday to advocate for him as the party’s consensus candidate, highlighting his previous contributions to the community.
